On the occasion of the exhibition Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism which will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition from April at the Musée d'Orsay, the latter wanted to make the event a national holiday by lending impressionist works from its collections in several cities in France including Limoges, birthplace of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, leading figure of the movement.

The BAL's impressionist collection mainly presents portraits, and in particular portraits of children (Portrait of Jean, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1899; The children of Gabriel Thomas, by Berthe Morisot, 1894). It is to be part of this line of intimate and family works that the BAL will host the magnificent Portrait of the young Fernand Halphen, dated 1880 and loaned by the Musée d'Orsay as part of this partnership.
