The people of Limoges will tell you: the banks of the Vienne are the place to recharge your batteries without leaving the city. A must-see for a stroll, a jog, a picnic, or to enjoy the view of the two medieval bridges, this area has a little something refreshing and authentic. And every June, the neighborhood comes alive with the Fête des Ponts (Bridge Festival): water sports, a funfair, and fireworks are on the program. Come on, let's take you on a journey of discovery of this charming neighborhood!

A bit of history

The banks of the Vienne bear witness to a past that was both popular and industrious. Formerly called Bridges district, this sector extending between the medieval bridges Saint Etienne et Saint Martial, housed a modest population called the Ponticauds. There were washerwomen, fishermen, workers and also activities related to the tannery or the family timber floating whose work depended directly on the Vienne, at the heart of their daily lives. This densely populated district was sometimes denigrated by the inhabitants of the “beautiful districts”, but it nonetheless remained a lively, supportive place deeply rooted in the Limoges identity. It retains its authentic charm with its cobbled streets, old houses and two emblematic bridges.
