We've heard whispers that east of Limoges lies a small village called Aureil (yes, we couldn't resist the rhyme!😉) Its rich history will surprise you... And if its name intrigues you, no need to get out the crystal ball: follow us to discover its origins and secrets!
A bit of history
According to legend, a dove guided Gaucher to the site of Silvaticus, where he obtained permission to build a monastery for the canons of Saint-Étienne de Limoges. Between 1081 and 1085, the priory, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, is installed, welcoming his first disciples, some of whom, like Étienne de Muret, will become famous.
The Priory Church, consecrated in 1093, underwent several destructions and reconstructions: in the 15th century, probably by the English, in 1575 by Huguenot troops, then new restorations in 1691 and 1890. The magnificent woodwork of the choir dates from the end of the 15th century. Since then, we celebrate Gaucher and his companion Faucher every 7 years for the seven-yearly Ostensions. Where does this name come from ? The name “Aureil” would date fromGallo-Roman period when a gold mine was discovered! So maybe you will find a treasure…?
