History and porcelain
Where does the expression “to be fired” come from?
Expression “to be fired” goes back to the First World War. At that time, officers deemed ineffective were sent to cities far from the front, such as Limoges, to be discreetly removed without official sanction. Since then, the term has come to mean being forcibly removed from one's post, often because one is considered incompetent or unsuitable for the job.
But being “fired” for real while spending a few days in Limoges is a pretty good idea, we assure you! its listed heritage, its museums, its porcelain world famous, its local specialties et its corners of nature, it’s the perfect destination to recharge your batteries (We don’t say that because it’s our home…)
What is the old name of Limoges?
Limoges was founded by the Romans in 10 BC, near a ford. They called it Augustoritum, which means “Augustus' Ford”, in honor of the emperor. Later, the city took the name of Limoges, in reference to the Lemovices, a Gallic people who came from Central Europe and settled in the region. In Roman times, the city had a large amphitheater, several thermal baths, a forum (a large square for popular assemblies), and rich residences.
