Limoges and jazz: a deep-rooted history
No, jazz didn't just arrive in Limoges a few years ago. Its history here goes back much further, to the early days of the 20th century.
From the First World War, the city discovered jazz under the influence of the American soldiers present between 1917 and 1919Their culture fascinates: we then adopt the basketball, African-American dances…and of course, that rhythmic and vibrant music that is Jazz.
But this first encounter was only the beginning of a great story. Limoges quickly became a true artistic crossroads. Renowned figures graced its stages: Josephine Baker, Fred Adison, Ray Ventura and AlibertThe musical excitement is gaining ground, even inspiring an emblematic local figure: Jean-Marie Masse. With his friend Roger Blanc, he discovered jazz at a very young age. At the Liberation, they founded the Hot Clubs of Limoges, who will program up to four concerts per year. Thanks to them, Limoges is gradually asserting its jazzy identity.
Today, this rich legacy continues. The fund Paulette – Jean-Marie Masse, bequeathed to the City of Limoges, brings together nearly 20 000 parts carefully preserved and restored to BFM since 2016. Part of this collection can also be viewed online. And jazz, in Limoges, still resonates... even in the architecture inspired by this universe and in the Enamel Shards Festival, which perpetuates each year this unique link between the city and this swinging music.
