Republic SquareOn August 26, Limoges will shine to the rhythm of the Paralympic Games by welcoming the passing of the Paralympic Flame. A symbol of unity, courage and sporting excellence which will light up the city for 4 days of celebration, from August 25 to 28. The highlight of the show? The lighting of the Olympic cauldron at Place de la République, scheduled between 17:30 p.m. and 19:30 p.m. A magical moment not to be missed!
The Paralympic Flame across France
Organized every four years after the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games are an international competition reserved for athletes with disabilities. They celebrate self-improvement, inclusion and high-level sporting performance. For the first time, France will host these games August 28 to September 8, 2024. The Paralympic Flame will arrive on August 25 for a 4-day relay through 50 cities. Unlike the Olympic Flame, which is unique, 12 flames, symbols of the 12 days of competition, will travel across France before reuniting in Paris August 28 and mark the opening of the 2024 Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic Flame journey
On August 26 at 17:30 p.m., the Paralympic Flame will start from Republic Square and will follow a route including rue de la Courtine, rue Jean-Jaurès, rue Jeanty Sarre, rue Élie-Berthet, rue Haute-Vienne, place Haute-Vienne, rue Banc Léger, place des Bancs, place de la Motte, rue du Bell tower, rue Saint-Martial. The loop will end Place de la République around 19-19:30 p.m. for the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.
3 young porters from Limoges
On August 26, among the 11 flame bearers of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, 24 torchbearers will carry the Flame over 6 km through Limoges. They will cover 4 loops of 1,5 km to 4,5 km carrying the Flame for 250 meters each. Among them, 3 young Limougeauds were selected by the city of Limoges to carry the Flame and embody sporting and civic values.
- Romain Massinon (16 years old): Judoka and volunteer firefighter, he symbolizes the values of judo and the courage of firefighters.
- Camille Lacote: An accomplished sportswoman, she defends the values of sport and respect through the UNSS, climbing and refereeing.
- Raphaël Chalot: A wheelchair rugby player despite Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, he embodies perseverance and the strength of the sporting spirit.
Sports and musical entertainment for the passing of the flame
For this unique event, Limoges is transformed into a real Olympic village! Numerous sporting and festive activities will punctuate the day, for all tastes and all ages.
The main lively places
- Republic Square, the heart of the event, you will find the Village departure and arrival of the relay of the Flame with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. Numerous sports demonstrations will also be offered on a temporary 150 m2 slab: a climbing wall, spaces dedicated to wrestling, table tennis and basketball.
- Place Haute-Vienne, baseball fans will be delighted with the installation of a mobile cage, hosted by the club The Limoges Sparks.
- Place de la Motte, tennis fans, get your rackets on! An Urban Tennis court, offered by the Haute-Vienne departmental tennis committee, will be at your disposal until the last passage of the torchbearer (around 18:45 p.m.).
A great musical evening on the 26th from 21 p.m. to midnight
To properly celebrate this great event, a big DJ evening will take place Place de la République from 21 p.m. to midnight.
- From 21h to 22h: Las Bundesligas, a lover of blends, edits and reworks, offers mixes influenced by afro, baile and techno sounds. Co-founder of Bamboches botanos and member of the Sportswear Soundsystem collective, he mixes electronic beats and nostalgia.
- 22pm to 23pm : Sir Jam Jali, Multi-faceted DJ, ignites the dance floors of bars in unusual locations. His taste for energizing and uplifting sounds makes him surprising and unique.
- From 23 p.m. to midnight: Don Dreano, DJ from Limoges, excels in Italo-disco, balearic, rare grooves, house, UK garage and club music. Its surprising and varied rhythms will transport you.
Limoges, Land of Games 2024
Limoges is not just a random stopover for the Flame! Inasmuch as Land of Games 2024, the city is renowned for its involvement in wheelchair rugby, wheelchair fencing and Paralympic judo, with champions like Cyril Jonard, 10 times world champion. Limoges regularly hosts national and international disabled sports teams, and will be the residence city for the French Paralympic swimming team. In June 2024, the city also organized the Swimming World Series, bringing together nearly 400 athletes.
