Crisscrossed by an infinity of streams, the plateau of millevaches, whose average altitude is around 700 m, is a proliferation of hills and valleys, an alternation of meadows, moors purple in summer with mauve heather and of resinous. Welcome to the land of springs and waterlogged bogs. The winters here are harsh.

A natural park, reserve of a thousand springs

The Millevaches Regional Nature Park en Limousin was created in 2004. It covers the 3 departments of the former Limousin region, encompassing seven landscaped areas including the valley of the Vienne (which has its source there), Lake Vassivière and its surroundings, the Monédières massif or the sources of the Millevaches plateau with the Longéroux peat bog. The park, whose plant and animal heritage is of great diversity, has taken as its emblem the otter.

Staff picks

  • The path of the poets, to the west of Lac de Vassivière, dotted with sculpted stones engraved with extracts from the works of Limousin poets, from troubadours to contemporaries.
  • His beaches, its port and its pedal boats: Nothing like a trip to the lake and a few degrees less to cool off in summer!
  • Mount Gargan, highest point of the Millevaches natural park (730 m altitude): invigorating hike and breathtaking view of the Monédières and the Ambazac mountains. At the top stand the remains of a XNUMXth century granite chapel, a strategic site during the Second World War, which was the site of fierce battles between the maquis of Georges Guingouin and the German soldiers.
